A Turning Point in the Country

This conclusion from a previous BBC article regarding the Russia investigation highlights the dark place our country has gone:

"[T]he American people are being asked to choose between two unpalatable versions of events: abuse of power by one president or treason that put another in the White House.

It cannot be both."

My Reaction to the Presidential Address

Here is the Text of the Speech: Transcript

1. Why was a speech like this not given at the Inauguration? Why would the President not want to attempt to unite the country right away, as opposed to at this late hour?

2. Given the fact that at least parts of his team have essentially been accused of performing borderline treasonous activities (disclaimer: nothing has been proven) it seems as if it should have at least been touched upon.

3. I think the highlighting of those who lost family members to illegal immigrants was appropriate. I agree with the position of keeping illegal immigrants out. However...

4. The Bible teaches us to treat the aliens among us as one of us. Based on this, we need some kind of amnesty for those already here in order to calm the deportation fears. Perhaps the President's strategy is to wait until the wall is built first, in order to avoid a sudden surge.

5. If the President's vision for legal immigration (merit based) was our historical standard, I wouldn't exist. That's a little mind blowing.

6. My ancestors have been in America much longer than Trump's. I get tired of him lecturing me on being an American.

7. I wish I could get just one Presidential Address or State of the Union that gave just tacit praise to the military.

8. The line stating that 43 million Americans are on food stamps really hit home. That is absolutely unbelievable.

9. Rome had mighty warriors, but the empire collapsed anyway.

10. No mention of climate change.

11. No revocation of the statement that the media is the enemy of the American people. Here it is for posterity:

12. Now all of a sudden the Republicans want to spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure?

Biblical Reasons We Are Failing

Our country and society are so far removed from the basic values of our founding, that unless we make major changes as a nation, we will collapse as other civilizations have done in the past.

To demonstrate, I've enlisted the help of Leviticus.

Here are some of the basic laws spoken to Moses that I feel we should remember, relearn or discover, for the sake of ourselves and our country.

From Leviticus 19:

4 Do not turn to idols or make cast images for yourselves: I am the Lord your God.

15 You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor.

16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the Lord.

17 You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself.

18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

33 When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien.

34 The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.*

*This sentiment is expressed frequently in the Old Testament. It must be important.
